Mercy received an urgent call about a dog who was suffering and desperately needed help.

She had been shot, attacked, and abandoned in critical condition for more than a week. Despite her injuries, she was still caring for her nine newborn puppies.

Mercy immediately rescued Mama Sweetie and her puppies and rushed them to Animal Hospital of Marion for emergency veterinary care.

Her injuries were severe. One of her front legs could not be saved, and the other had a serious open wound complicated by infection. Thanks to prompt medical treatment, dedicated care, and the support of our community, Mama Sweetie began her long road to recovery.

Mercy was able to provide the veterinary care she desperately needed while ensuring that her puppies were safe and healthy. In time, Mama Sweetie and all of her puppies were placed in loving homes.

Today, Mama Sweetie is thriving with a family who adores her.

Her family includes two twelve-year-old children, two fellow tripawd rescue dogs, and two rescue cats. 

According to her mom:

"She has been such a blessing to us! She is our little princess and naps on our bed much of the day. She also naps with our tuxedo cat. She really is the sweetest of all of our furbabies! She loves peanut butter and expects a treat every time she comes in from outside. We will be forever grateful to Joy and Mercy for saving her and bringing her into our lives!"

Mama Sweetie's story is a reminder of what is possible when compassion, veterinary care, foster homes, and community support come together. From abandonment and suffering to safety, love, and a family of her own, she truly received the second chance she deserved.

Valentine came to Mercy on Valentine's Day after a concerned citizen reported a dog living in heartbreaking conditions and suffering repeated abuse.

People had been shooting her with pellet guns, kicking her, and treating her with unimaginable cruelty. Starving and desperate for food, Valentine was eventually caught in a cat trap while trying to survive on her own. She was terrified of people, covered in Demodex mange across her face, and in poor physical condition.

Mercy brought Valentine to receive veterinary care, where X-rays revealed pellets lodged in her body. Her leg had also been badly damaged from years of neglect and abuse. Given the severity of her condition and emotional trauma, the veterinarian told Joy that euthanasia would not have been an unreasonable decision.

But Joy saw something worth fighting for.

Over the next six months, Mercy worked tirelessly to treat Valentine's mange, heal her wounds, improve her health, and help her learn that not all people would hurt her. Recovery was slow, and trust came even more slowly, but Valentine kept moving forward.

Today, Valentine is healthy, safe, and deeply loved.

Although she remains fearful of most people because of her past experiences, she has formed a remarkable bond with her Forever Foster mom, who understands that healing happens at Valentine's pace.

Her foster mom shares:

"I'm so grateful she lets me live with her today. It took many months to build trust, and she is still very afraid of people, but she trusts me. She'll lay at my feet and eat out of my hand. I let her set the tone and boundaries based on what works for her. We even have the vet, Dr. Justin, come to the house so she can receive care without becoming overwhelmed by people.

Her nickname is 'Valley Girl.' She LOVES plush squeaky toys and carries them around everywhere. She also loves playing with other dogs. Her favorite treats are Caesar dinners, Milk-Bones, and Pup-Peroni treats."

Valentine's story reminds us that success doesn't always mean finding a traditional forever home. 

Sometimes success means helping a traumatized animal feel safe again. It means honoring their boundaries, meeting them where they are, and giving them the time, patience, and love they need to heal.

Because of Mercy, Valentine no longer has to fight to survive. She has a home, a family, toys she loves, and someone she trusts.

And for a dog who once knew only fear, that is a beautiful happy ending.

Marty's story is still being written, but his journey already shows the incredible difference that compassion and proper care can make.

Marty arrived at Mercy late on a Sunday night when someone brought him to Joy's home and said he had been shot and attacked by another dog. They stated they would return, but they never came back.

At just 12 weeks old, Marty was in excruciating pain and suffering from severe injuries. Mercy immediately worked to stabilize him, keep him as comfortable as possible through the night, and ensure he received veterinary care first thing the following morning.

The news was heartbreaking.

The veterinarian believed Marty might never walk again because of the severity of his spinal injuries. X-rays revealed another troubling discovery as well. Marty's tiny stomach was filled with rocks, a sign of the desperate conditions he had endured before arriving at Mercy.

Despite the challenges ahead, Mercy refused to give up on him.

Marty received surgery, comprehensive veterinary care, pain management, and the proper nutrition he had been missing. Slowly but surely, he began to improve.

Today, Marty is thriving.

Not only can he move and play, but he is also walking. While he still has a road ahead of him, his progress has exceeded expectations. He recently began swim therapy with one of Mercy's volunteers to help build strength, improve mobility, and continue his recovery.

Through it all, Marty has remained determined and full of spirit.

He is a true trooper, a source of joy for everyone who meets him, and proof that miracles can happen when animals are given a chance. We are hopeful that with continued rehabilitation and care, Marty will be ready to find the loving forever home he deserves.

For now, Marty is doing what puppies should do: playing, growing, healing, and looking forward to a brighter future.

Wobbles is a sweet 11-year-old Chihuahua who was abandoned and left to suffer with multiple serious medical conditions.

When Wobbles came to Mercy, she was in desperate need of veterinary care. She was diagnosed with lenticular sclerosis, an abdominal inguinal hernia, Grade 4 periodontal disease, a heart murmur, and bladder stones. Her dental disease was especially severe, and the veterinarian determined that many of her teeth needed to be removed. The chronic dental infection was also contributing to her heart issues.

Despite the long list of medical concerns, there was good news: with proper treatment, Wobbles had a strong chance at a comfortable and happy life.

Mercy ensured that Wobbles received the veterinary care she needed, including dental treatment and surgery to address her medical conditions. With pain relieved and her health restored, Wobbles began to show everyone the loving, gentle personality that had been hidden behind her suffering.

What happened next is one of our favorite kinds of happy endings.

Wobbles was placed with a loving foster family who quickly fell in love with her. Before long, they realized they couldn't imagine life without her and made her a permanent member of their family.

Today, Wobbles is safe, cherished, and surrounded by love.

Her story reminds us that senior animals are never "too old" to deserve a second chance. With proper medical care and a loving home, they can continue to bring joy, companionship, and unconditional love to the people lucky enough to welcome them into their lives.

Wobbles' journey began with abandonment and suffering, but it ended exactly where every dog deserves to be: at home. 

Betty White is a Chihuahua who came to Mercy under heartbreaking circumstances.

She was found as a stray on actress Betty White's birthday, which inspired her name. At the time she was found, Betty White was weak, severely underweight, and struggling to survive. Her condition was so critical that she would collapse and pass out due to malnutrition.

Mercy immediately took her into care and developed a careful feeding plan to help her regain strength safely. Through slow, monitored feeding, a consistent routine, and proper veterinary care, Betty White gradually began to recover.

Day by day, her health improved. As her body healed, her sweet personality began to shine through.

Today, Betty White is thriving and enjoying the life every senior dog deserves. She is healthy, loved, and living her best life with her Forever Foster family, who ensure she receives the care, comfort, and companionship she needs.

Betty White's story is a reminder that even the most fragile animals can recover when given a chance. Sometimes rescue begins with something as simple as a warm bed, a full bowl, and people who refuse to give up.

For Betty White, that chance changed everything.

Jonas is a Double Merle dog who was born both blind and deaf.

Because of his disabilities, his breeder discarded him when they realized he could not be sold. Jonas entered the world already facing significant challenges, and by the time he came to Mercy, he was frightened, confused, and struggling to navigate his surroundings.

Mercy welcomed Jonas into care and began the slow process of helping him feel safe and secure. Because he cannot rely on sight or hearing, Jonas experiences the world primarily through his sense of smell and touch. Mercy worked patiently to help him build confidence, teaching him how to move safely through his environment and introducing tools that would increase his independence.

One of his biggest accomplishments was learning how to use a ramp, giving him greater freedom and confidence as he explored his surroundings.

Every day, Jonas continues to make progress. Through consistency, patience, and positive experiences, he is slowly learning that the world is not something to fear. While his journey is ongoing, he is becoming more comfortable, more confident, and more trusting.

Today, Jonas is safe, loved, and surrounded by people who understand his unique needs. Mercy remains committed to helping him continue to grow, build confidence, and reach his fullest potential.

Jonas' story is a reminder that disabilities do not diminish an animal's worth. With compassion, patience, and the right support, animals with special needs can live happy, fulfilling lives.

For Jonas, being blind and deaf did not mean he was beyond hope. It simply meant he needed someone willing to see his potential.

Tootsie is a senior girl whose story began with heartbreak but is becoming one of hope, healing, and resilience.

She was found abandoned along a rural country road, blind, emaciated, covered in fleas, and too weak to function normally. Tootsie was fighting for her life.

When she arrived at Mercy, veterinarians discovered she was facing multiple serious medical challenges. In addition to chronic dry eye and a hole in one of her corneas that may eventually require eye removal, she was suffering from severe flea anemia caused by a massive flea infestation. Her red blood cell count was so dangerously low that she required blood transfusions to survive.

Tootsie was also battling elevated kidney values and severe pancreatitis, making her condition even more critical.

Mercy immediately stepped in to provide the emergency veterinary care she desperately needed. Through dedicated medical treatment, proper nutrition, and the loving support of her caregivers, Tootsie slowly began to recover.

Today, Tootsie is a completely different dog.

She has gained weight, her condition has stabilized, and her prognosis is very encouraging. Most importantly, she is safe, loved, and thriving with her foster family.

Those who know Tootsie best describe her as sassy, happy, and full of personality. Despite everything she endured, her spirit shines brightly.

Mercy continues to provide the medical care and support she needs as she works toward full stability, ensuring that she can enjoy the comfort, dignity, and love every senior dog deserves.

Tootsie's story is a reminder that even the most fragile animals can recover when given a chance. What began as a story of abandonment and suffering has become a story of hope, healing, and unconditional love.

Harvey's journey began when he was abandoned in the driveway of one of Mercy's volunteers.

When he arrived, it was immediately apparent that he needed medical attention. He had a large mass on his neck, and Mercy quickly arranged for veterinary care to determine what was wrong.

After testing and a biopsy, veterinarians diagnosed Harvey with a slow-growing form of cancer. Unfortunately, because of the location of the tumor, surgery is not an option.

While the diagnosis was difficult to hear, there was also reason for hope. Harvey is comfortable, enjoying life, and continuing to do the things he loves most.

Working closely with his veterinary team, Mercy is focusing on maintaining Harvey's quality of life through supportive care, including recommended medications and treatments to keep him comfortable for as long as possible.

In the meantime, Harvey has one very important job: enjoying every day.

Mercy's mission for Harvey is simple. We are going to spoil him.

His favorite things include:

• Gerber Baby Chicken Sticks
• Running around the yard
• Plenty of love and attention

Today, Harvey is living life on his own terms, surrounded by people who care deeply about him. Rather than focusing on his diagnosis, Mercy is focusing on making sure his days are filled with comfort, happiness, and all the treats he can enjoy.

Harvey's story reminds us that rescue is not always about finding a cure. Sometimes it is about ensuring that an animal is safe, loved, pain-free, and cherished for every day they have left.

And for Harvey, that is exactly what Mercy intends to provide.

Denzel's story began on one of the coldest nights of the year.

Someone abandoned him in a hard, dirty crate at the end of Joy's driveway. He had no blankets, no comfort, and no one caring for him. As he sat shivering in the cold and crying for help, his cries led Joy outside to discover him.

It was immediately clear that Denzel had suffered greatly.

Denzel had been used as a bait dog in a dog-fighting operation and carried the physical reminders of that cruelty. Scars covered his face and body, evidence of the abuse he had endured. He was also suffering from heartworm disease and was in need of immediate medical care.

Joy brought Denzel inside, where he was finally warm, safe, and cared for. He was given food, comfort, and a chance to rest before being taken to the veterinarian the following morning.

Veterinary testing confirmed that Denzel was heartworm positive, and treatment began right away. Mercy then worked through its network to find a dedicated foster family willing to help him through the long recovery process, including transporting him to and from veterinary appointments and ensuring he received the care he needed.

Over time, Denzel's health improved. With proper medical treatment, patience, and lots of love, he began to leave his difficult past behind.

Today, Denzel is thriving.

He recently completed his second round of heartworm treatment and continues to do well. Even better, the foster family who cared for him throughout his recovery fell completely in love with him.

What started as a foster placement became a forever home.

Denzel no longer knows the fear, neglect, and suffering that once defined his life. Instead, he knows warmth, safety, veterinary care, and a family that loves him unconditionally.

His story is a powerful reminder that rescue is not just about saving lives. It's about giving animals the opportunity to heal, trust again, and experience the love they always deserved.
